IP-based Video Surveillance Systems have taken video security to an advanced level. Video surveillance was originally used primarily to monitor warehouses, workplaces and highly-sensitive security areas. The advances in video system technology have resulted in an increased use of video security implementations. High-definition cameras and digital recording devices are now used to record areas outside the physical workplace.

Most surveillance video recordings, made with or without consent, are considered legal in the U.S., but you must be aware that laws and statutes vary by state. As a result, it is critical to weigh the balance of providing a secure and safe facility with the need to protect the privacy of the subjects of the video feed and that you understand the legal issues that have been raised related to video surveillance recordings.

The Legal Issues module topics include:

  • Local Jurisdictions
  • Security vs. Privacy Balance
  • Criminal, Civil and Governmental Law
  • Local Lawas and Regulations
  • Liabilities of Public and Individual Privacy
  • Unreasonable Search and Seizure
  • Silent Video
  • Surveillance Used in Court Proceedings
  • Authentication of Surveillance Video Recordings
  • Digital Signatures
  • Rules of Evidence
  • Encryption Methods
  • Civil and Criminal Liabilities
  • Public vs. Private Locations
